A fantastic opportunity has arisen in Asda House for a Wine Selector to join our team. The wine team is made up of two work streams: traders and selectors. The two teams work hand in glove to deliver great value wines for our customers and are jointly responsible for their categories. The selectors (headed up by Philippa Carr, Master of Wine) are responsible for the quality of all own label and tertiary lines and liaise directly with producers and winemakers to ensure consistency throughout the year. There is a rolling programme of weekly benchmarking of own label products against competitors; of winery visits; of tasting for range reviews, and where appropriate, tenders for own label. The wine selectors are responsible for the quality of all Asda wines and therefore are the key to winning awards for the own label range and upholding the credibility of wine within Asda. The selectors are the gatekeepers for quality in the wine team. Closes: 10.08.10. |
| Responsibilities: |
- Selecting wines and developing bespoke blends for Asda
- Identifying the needs of the Asda customer and sourcing the most appropriate wines for the Asda range, delivering exceptional quality and value for money
- Working closely with trading team making joint decisions on the range - Working with producers and winemakers continually to improve the quality of Asda's own label and tertiary branded wines, including delivery of own label tenders
- Sourcing award winning wines and wines which receive widespread third party endorsement at all price levels. This in turn drives Asda's overall quality perception
- Sourcing wines to hit pricing and profit parameters and commercial trading requirements
- Leading weekly benchmarking sessions in order to monitor wine quality and consistency
- Developing and maintaining relationships with new and existing suppliers through regular winery visits
- Managing and executing Asda press tastings, working closely with the PR company to answer the needs of wine journalists
- Supervising wine copy in marketing material and Asda Magazine, enhancing customer knowledge and quality perception
- Working closely with other categories including trading, category planning, supply, merchandising and Asda brand teams. Giving direction on own label concepts

| Requirements and Qualifications: |
- WSET Diploma (at Merit or Distinction) is essential
- A proven track record of selling to (at NAM level or above) or buying for a major multiple or major producer/ UK agent
- Commercially minded with experience of all wine quality levels, including entry level; sourcing for own label an advantage.
- Great communication skills
- Team player with ability to work closely with other selectors and the traders as well as other teams within Asda
- Passion for wine and just as passionate about the customer!
- Results driven
- A great commercial taster willing to work to an agreed brief and within a style framework set by the Wine Selection Manager
